Sobremesa: Domesticity as Doorway

RISD Decentralizing the Museum
2023

Materials: Recycled Paper

This project explores the potential of Sobremesa, a Latin American tradition of extended conversation after a meal, as a catalyst for bridging the gap between the museum and Providence's underrepresented Hispanic community.By examining the domestic environment as a familiar and inclusive space, the project aims to understand how museum experiences can be more accessible and relevant to this significant portion of the population.

Specifically, the project  investigated:

How Sobremesa can serve as a conceptual framework for designing museum experiences.

The potential of domestic settings to create a sense of belonging and trust, fostering a more equitable museum environment.

Strategies for integrating Hispanic cultural perspectives and narratives into museum exhibitions and programs.

By repurposing an abandoned church, this project reimagines pre-existing community beacons as a means to de-institutionalize the museum. Through the creation of welcoming and familiar spaces, the Church is transformed into a porous threshold operating as a doorway into/out of the Museum.
